How the calculation works
Eligible gold-alloy weight = gross item weight minus estimated non-gold components. Multiply the eligible grams by the gold fineness and the reference price per gram. A troy-ounce price is divided by 31.1034768. One pennyweight is 1.55517384g.
The item factors match the marks: 9ct = 0.375, 14ct = 0.585, 18ct = 0.750, 21ct = 0.875, 22ct = 0.916 and 24ct = 0.999. Custom percentages divide by 100; millesimal stamps divide by 1000.
Money is calculated without intermediate rounding and displayed to the penny, rounding halves up. Totals use the unrounded item values. The reference is not a quote or final purchase offer. See what we pay for gold for the policy and agreed price options.
Gold-filled or plated object? This tool is for solid gold alloys, not thin coatings. Stones and non-gold parts are weighed out. Signed, antique or collectable pieces are assessed individually.

Gold calculator questions
Which gold price does the calculator use?
It can use Fair Vintage's published gold price, entered by staff, or your own manual reference. A published price must pass the validity checks and be no more than four days old. Its last-updated time is shown in UK time. An unavailable or older price is not shown as current; manual entry still works.
Why can my offer differ from the gold value?
This is an indicative calculation, not a final offer. The exact payout percentage is confirmed in your written offer. Stones and non-gold parts are weighed out. Signed, antique or collectable pieces are assessed individually rather than by metal content alone.
How do I convert carat to a percentage?
Use the tested fineness mark where known: 375 means 37.5%, 585 means 58.5%, 750 means 75%, and 916 means 91.6%. The item selector keeps 24ct at 999 fineness, or 99.9%. In the percentage-of-an-ounce mode, 100% means the full fine-gold reference ounce, not 999 fineness.
