How the gold value is calculated

Gold value = pure-gold weight × gold price per gram in GBP. Pure-gold weight is the eligible gold-alloy weight multiplied by its fineness. Only non-gold parts are weighed out before that calculation.

For the marked fineness standards shown here: 9ct/375 uses 0.375; 14ct/585 uses 0.585; 18ct/750 uses 0.750; 22ct/916 uses 0.916; and 24ct/999 uses 0.999. The tested or documented fineness matters: for example, 916 and 916.7 are not identical. A coin specified as containing one troy ounce of fine gold contains 31.1034768g of gold, regardless of its gross alloy weight.

A hallmark or description alone is not a substitute for checking the piece. Gold-plated, rolled-gold and gold-filled objects must not be calculated as solid gold from their full weight.

Worked examples at our current gold price

The pounds below are worked out from our published gold price, shown with the date and time it was last updated. They are estimates; your written offer uses the agreed gold price. The jewellery examples assume no non-gold components.

For example, 10g of 9ct jewellery contains 3.75g of pure gold, and our offer is 80% to 95% of the value of that 3.75g. The table is also the text equivalent of the highlighted payout band. There are no carat-based payout tiers: the percentages apply to the calculated gold value.

Choose between two gold-price options

Choose a gold price locked by agreement and confirmed in writing before sending, or the average gold price in GBP between 9am and 5pm UK time on the day your parcel arrives.

  1. Lock in advance: the gold price is agreed and confirmed in writing before you send your parcel.
  2. Arrival-day average: use the average gold price in GBP between 9am and 5pm UK time on the day the parcel arrives.

Your written offer states the exact payout percentage before you decide.

No fees: the percentage is paid in full

Only non-gold parts, such as stones and steel springs, are weighed out. The stated percentage is paid in full, with no fees.

What is weighed out?

Stones, steel springs and other non-gold components are not gold weight. For a stone-set ring, the full item weight is not the weight of the gold alloy. For a watch, a gold case does not make the movement gold. The remaining alloy weight is then adjusted for fineness; the other metals within a 9ct or 18ct alloy are accounted for by that fineness factor, not weighed out a second time.

When an item is worth more than its gold

Signed or branded jewellery, antique pieces and collectable coins are assessed individually. Where their assessed value is higher than their gold value, the offer reflects that; an additional premium is not guaranteed.

Do not melt, dismantle or polish an antique or signed piece to prepare it for sale. Send photographs and any relevant paperwork so that the object can be considered as a whole.
