| Question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| What is offered? | H&T advertises pawnbroking and gold selling as separate services. |
| Who might compare it? | Someone considering a local assessment or borrowing against an item they want to keep. |
| What sets the terms? | The particular item assessment and written agreement, not this guide. |
| Main risk | Confusing a loan advance with a sale price, or borrowing without a workable redemption plan. |
The H&T pawn page and gold-selling page describe different journeys. Ask the member of staff to identify which one is being discussed before comparing any figures. This guide is about making that distinction, not recommending a credit product.
Start with the item you cannot replace
A ring inherited from a parent may have an ordinary second-hand value but an unusually high personal value. That makes the consequences of non-redemption more important, not less. Before visiting, ask yourself what would happen if the expected money for repayment did not arrive. A plan depending on an uncertain sale, gift or overtime payment deserves particular caution.
Conversely, if you have decided permanently to part with a broken chain, comparing sale offers may be more relevant than asking about a loan. Do not judge the two offers as though they were prices for the same transaction. One is money advanced against security; the other purchases the item. Neither is an insurance replacement valuation.
How an H&T enquiry works
- Identify the service. Say whether you are asking about a sale, a pawn loan, or separate figures for both. Keep the answers in separate columns.
- Describe the actual item. For jewellery, note hallmarks, missing stones, damage and any maker's signature. For a watch, record its reference and known service history without guessing authenticity.
- Arrange assessment. Confirm the relevant branch or online process directly with H&T, including what identification it requires and whether the item is within its current acceptance criteria.
- Read the written figures. For borrowing, request the advance, interest basis, total redemption amount at your intended date, contractual deadline and charges. For selling, request the actual amount payable and any deductions.
- Decide without mixing routes. Retain the agreement or receipt. If you decline an offer, make sure the correct item and all accessories are returned to you before leaving.
H&T's website describes a six-month pawn term and early repayment with interest calculated daily. These are provider descriptions checked on 17 October 2026, not a substitute for your agreement. Consult its pawn information and FAQs for the current process.
Prepare jewellery for a useful assessment
Photograph the complete piece, fastenings, stones and readable marks. Keep pairs together. A single earring and a matching pair are different sale propositions even if their combined metal weight is similar. Bring existing paperwork, but do not order an expensive insurance valuation simply to obtain a buying quote unless a specific reason justifies it.
Do not remove stones, polish away a maker's mark or file the surface to demonstrate the metal. Those actions can destroy evidence needed for whole-piece assessment. If a piece is dirty, ask whether cleaning is needed rather than applying chemicals to an unidentified stone or antique finish. Separate visibly different metals so a mixed bag does not become one unexplained number.
Under GOV.UK hallmarking guidance, precious-metal standards are subject to legal exemptions; absence of a hallmark does not by itself settle every question about age or composition. A mark also does not establish a resale price. A jeweller may need to test material and assess construction as well as read the stamp.
Compare gold offers on the same basis
For a metal-only comparison, ask for assessed gold weight, purity, the price basis and deductions. Gross jewellery weight may include stones, steel springs or other non-gold parts. A simple reference calculation is eligible gold weight multiplied by fineness multiplied by a fine-gold reference price per gram. The buying offer can then reflect the buyer's margin and costs.
Suppose two buyers inspect the same chain. One records a lower gold weight after identifying non-gold components; another quotes only a total. The larger headline amount does not explain whether their assessments are consistent. Ask both for the weight and basis before deciding. Do not use an online retail listing for a similar-looking chain as proof that either buyer must pay that price.
For an antique or signed piece, request a separate view on whether design, maker or saleability changes the offer. A scrap calculation is a useful baseline, not a complete valuation of every item. Fair Vintage's gold-content calculator explains the arithmetic without pretending to supply a guaranteed live buying price.
Costs and redemption questions
Keep a simple calendar record alongside the money figures. Write down the agreed end date, your planned earlier repayment date if different, the settlement amount requested and how to arrange collection. If somebody else would collect the pledge for you, ask about authorisation rather than assuming the receipt alone is sufficient. Store the records somewhere you can access even if the pledged item is a phone or another device you normally use for email.
Ask for a dated redemption figure, not just a monthly percentage. If you plan to redeem after several weeks, request the total on that intended date and explain what happens if you miss it. Where renewal is discussed, ask whether it requires payment, a fresh assessment or different terms. Do not treat renewal as guaranteed access to indefinite borrowing.
Consider the item and repayment money together. If redeeming the pledge would leave rent or essential bills unpaid, the loan has not solved the wider shortfall. MoneyHelper's pawnbroking guide explains the high-cost nature of this borrowing. This page deliberately does not turn a representative advertising example into a personal estimate of your cost.
Unredeemed pledges may be sold. Surplus rights depend on the applicable agreement and statutory rules, including exceptions for small loans. Not every pawn ends in an auction or a surplus, and any payment may differ from the earlier valuation. The FCA sector review explains why sale proceeds, reasonable expenses and the amount owed matter.
Practical strengths and limitations
A counter assessment lets you discuss the item and ask questions face to face. Separate sale and loan enquiries can clarify your options. These advantages do not establish that a particular offer is the highest available or that an item will be accepted.
Borrowing adds a deadline and costs; selling removes the possibility of simply redeeming the item later. A convenient branch visit is not a reason to overlook either consequence. Compare two or three appropriate written offers where practical, but do not pay repeated postage or appraisal charges without knowing what useful information you will receive.
Alternatives and a useful community question
Read pawn versus sale before comparing H&T with Cash Converters or Prestige Pawnbrokers. For jewellery you have chosen to sell, start with the gold and jewellery route guide. A specialist whole-piece opinion may be useful where a metal-only assessment leaves important features unexplained.
In the public r/Edinburgh thread Selling gold jewellery, dated 13 November 2023, the original question concerns a chain being assessed as scrap rather than as a wearable piece; a reply mentions H&T. That is a useful assessment question, not evidence of today's H&T prices or a representative customer review. Forum opinion cannot authenticate your chain.
Questions before visiting H&T
Is pawning the same as selling my gold?
No. A pawn loan is borrowing secured on a pledge, with repayment terms and a risk of losing the item if it is not redeemed. A sale transfers the item to a buyer. Ask for both options separately if you are unsure, then compare ownership consequences as well as the money available.
Should I bring an insurance valuation?
Bring paperwork you already have because it can help identify the piece. Its insurance replacement figure is not a buying offer, however. A buyer considers the actual item and its resale route. Do not buy a new valuation report merely because you expect its higher figure to determine a cash offer.
Can I repay a pawn loan early?
H&T describes early repayment and daily interest on its pawn information page. Request a redemption statement for the day you intend to pay, including any applicable charges and the method for collecting your item. Do not calculate the exact settlement from a headline monthly rate without checking the contractual basis.
What happens if I cannot redeem the item?
Contact the lender before the deadline and seek free debt advice if repayment would compromise essentials. Unredeemed items may be sold or, in applicable small-loan cases, forfeited. The agreement and legal rules determine notices and any surplus entitlement. Keeping a receipt does not itself extend the repayment period or protect ownership indefinitely.
Does a missing hallmark make jewellery worthless?
Not necessarily. Hallmarking has exemptions, and a buyer may assess metal by testing as well as marks. Missing or unclear marks can create uncertainty that needs explaining. Ask what material and weight were established, and whether any design, maker or stone value was considered separately from the metal.
How should I compare two gold offers?
Compare the same pieces, eligible weight, fineness, price timestamp and net amount payable. Ask whether the figure is for outright sale or a loan advance. If one offer values a wearable piece and another treats it as scrap, record that distinction instead of assuming the difference is simply a better rate.
