Krugerrand valuation —
assessed individually, not just weighed.

A Krugerrand is always worth its gold content — but early dates and proof issues can be worth significantly more. We check every coin for date, condition, and proof status, and assess whether the numismatic premium exceeds the standard bullion price. Written per-coin valuation, not a bulk weight offer.

Krugerrand values — indicative ranges by size and date

Values based on approximate current gold prices and typical UK dealer premiums. Actual values will be calculated at the gold price on the day of assessment.

Important: Most Krugerrands trade at a modest premium above the gold spot price. But first-year issues (1967), proof coins, and complete sets can be worth significantly more. Selling Krugerrands to a gold scrap dealer at melt value risks losing these premiums.

What our Krugerrand valuation includes

Krugerrand vs. other gold bullion coins

The Krugerrand was the world's first modern bullion coin, introduced in 1967. It remains the most widely traded gold coin globally, with over 70 million ounces produced. This liquidity means Krugerrands are easy to sell and command consistent premiums.

Compared to Britannias (which are CGT-exempt in the UK as legal tender), Krugerrands are not CGT-exempt — but they typically trade at lower premiums, making them more cost-effective for pure gold investment. We buy both and can advise on the relative values.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a Krugerrand worth in the UK?

A standard 1oz Krugerrand is worth the current gold price for one troy ounce of gold, plus a small premium (typically 3–8% above spot). At current prices, this means a 1oz Krugerrand is worth approximately £1,600–£1,900. Early dates (1967–1969) and proof issues can command significantly higher premiums. We assess each coin individually.

Are some Krugerrand dates worth more than others?

Yes. The first year of issue (1967) is the most sought after, with fine examples commanding 20–50% above spot price. Early dates (1968–1970) also carry modest premiums. Proof Krugerrands, particularly pre-1980 issues in original cases, are worth significantly more. Common dates from the 1970s–2000s typically trade at a standard bullion premium.

What sizes of Krugerrand do you value?

All sizes: 1oz (33.93g), 1/2oz (16.97g), 1/4oz (8.48g), and 1/10oz (3.39g). Fractional Krugerrands typically carry slightly higher percentage premiums than 1oz coins due to higher manufacturing costs and collector demand. We assess each size individually at current market rates.

Do Krugerrands need to be in perfect condition?

No. Krugerrands are bullion coins designed to be handled, and light wear does not significantly affect value. Heavy damage (deep scratches, bent coins, mounted coins) can reduce the premium above spot but the gold content retains its value. Coins in original mint capsules or tubes may command a small condition premium.

Is it legal to sell Krugerrands in the UK?

Yes, completely legal. The sanctions that restricted Krugerrand trade in the 1980s and 1990s were lifted in 1999. Krugerrands are freely traded in the UK and throughout Europe. They are one of the most liquid gold bullion coins in the world.
