Gold valuation —
tested, weighed, and valued per item.

Gold value depends on carat, weight, and whether the item has collector interest above its metal content. We test every piece, weigh it, identify the carat, and assess whether it is worth more as gold content or as a collectible. Every item is valued individually in writing.

Fair Vintage pays 80% to 95% of the gold value, with no fees. Your exact percentage is confirmed in your written offer before you decide.

Gold value: use the agreed price and tested fineness

Gold prices change. Use the calculation and clearly labelled illustrative examples in our payout policy, not an undated table as a current buying quote.

See computed examples at an explicitly illustrative price, not a current buying-rate table.

The calculation needs the agreed gold price, eligible weight and fineness. Signed or branded jewellery, antique pieces and collectable coins are assessed individually. Where their assessed value is higher than their gold value, the offer reflects that; an additional premium is not guaranteed.

What our gold valuation report includes

Gold jewellery vs. gold coins — different valuation approaches

Plain modern gold jewellery — chains, wedding bands, damaged earrings — is valued primarily on weight and carat. The gold price per gram determines the value, and the jewellery's design adds little premium.

A full sovereign contains approximately 7.32g of fine gold. Date, mint, condition and collector demand can affect the whole-coin value; no fixed premium applies to every sovereign.

Signed or branded jewellery, antique pieces and collectable coins are assessed individually. Where their assessed value is higher than their gold value, the offer reflects that; an additional premium is not guaranteed.

To understand the arithmetic yourself, see our guide on how much your gold is worth, which walks through weight, carat, and purity. If your pieces carry small stamped symbols, our explainer on UK hallmarks shows how to read the fineness and assay office marks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the value of gold?

Gold value is pure-gold weight multiplied by the gold price per gram in GBP. Choose a gold price locked by agreement and confirmed in writing before sending, or the average gold price in GBP between 9am and 5pm UK time on the day your parcel arrives. The written offer states the exact percentage before you decide.

What is the difference between 9ct and 18ct gold value?

9ct gold is 37.5% pure gold (marked 375), while 18ct gold is 75% pure gold (marked 750). Gram-for-gram, 18ct gold is worth exactly double the gold content of 9ct. A 10g 18ct chain contains 7.5g of pure gold; a 10g 9ct chain contains 3.75g. We test every item to confirm the carat — hallmarks can be misleading or absent.

Do you buy broken or damaged gold?

Broken or damaged gold still has gold content. Fair Vintage pays 80% to 95% of the gold value, with no fees. Your exact percentage is confirmed in your written offer before you decide. Signed or branded jewellery, antique pieces and collectable coins are assessed individually. Where their assessed value is higher than their gold value, the offer reflects that; an additional premium is not guaranteed.

Is it better to sell gold to a specialist or a cash-for-gold shop?

Ask any buyer, in writing, what percentage of the gold value they pay, which price and time period they use, and whether fees are deducted. Ask separately whether the intact object has collector or resale value.

What gold items do you accept for valuation?

All gold items: jewellery (rings, chains, bracelets, brooches, pendants, earrings), gold coins (sovereigns, Krugerrands, Britannias, world gold), gold bullion (bars, ingots), dental gold, gold watches, and scrap gold in any condition. We test everything and do not reject items based on appearance.
