The problem with most silver buyers

Melt value is the floor — not the price.

Walk into most coin dealers, post to most bullion buyback sites, or use a service like Cash4Coins, and your silver will be weighed and priced at or below the silver spot rate. That's fine for generic bullion bars. It's a significant undervaluation for almost everything else.

A 1935 George V Crown in good condition is not just 28 grams of silver. A Royal Mint proof Britannia in its original box is not a generic silver round. A full set of Victorian shillings with key dates is worth far more than the sum of their metal content.

Fair Vintage uses specialist coin valuers. Before any offer is made, every piece is identified, researched, and priced against what comparable examples have recently sold for — not just what silver traded at this morning.

How we price silver bullion

Based on current silver rates. Always in writing.

Your offer is based on current silver market rates × troy ounce weight × purity. We show you the weight, the purity and the rate applied — line by line. No mystery deductions. No "handling fees" buried in the small print.

For collector bullion (limited mintage, coloured, gilded, or proof-quality pieces), our specialists assess secondary market demand and collector interest alongside the metal value, with everything explained in writing.

Sending large or heavy bullion

Kilo bars, tubes of coins, large collections — no problem.

How we value silver coins

Transparent. Written. Coin by coin.

Every coin we receive is identified by reign, date, mint mark and variety. We check the grade against standard numismatic scales (Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine, Uncirculated), then cross-reference against recent auction realisations and dealer asking prices for comparable examples.

For silver bullion coins and bars, we price based on current silver market rates, weight and purity — with the full calculation shown to you in writing.

You receive a written paragraph for every piece — what it is, what condition it's in, and why it's worth the figure we've quoted. If you disagree, you can decline and have it returned free of charge.

British silver content guide

Common questions

Selling silver coins — answered honestly.

These are the questions we're asked most often. If yours isn't here, call us on 01234 815116 or email support@fairvintage.co.uk.

How much are my silver coins worth?

Silver coin value comes from two factors: the silver content (based on current market rates) and any numismatic or collector interest the coin carries. Pre-1920 British coins are 92.5% silver; pre-1947 coins are 50%. Royal Mint proof coins, rare dates and low-mintage pieces are assessed individually by our coin specialists, who provide a written explanation for every offer.

Do you pay more than melt value?

Yes. Where a coin has numismatic or collector value, our specialist valuers assess it against current market data for comparable pieces — not just its metal content. You receive a written explanation of exactly how the offer was reached.

How do I sell silver coins safely?

Request a free pack from us. It comes with tracked, prepaid, insured postage to £5,000 — so your coins are covered from the moment the courier scans the parcel. Your parcel is then opened live on YouTube so condition is recorded on camera before anyone touches the coins.

What if I only want to sell some coins?

You decide coin by coin. Accept the ones you want to sell, decline the rest. Anything you decline is returned free, fully insured, within 5 working days. There is no pressure to sell everything, or anything.

How quickly will I be paid?

Within 72 hours of your parcel going live on YouTube. If we miss that window, we add 3% to your total. That commitment is written into the contract you sign before you send anything.

How do you compare to Cash4Coins?

Cash4Coins and most bullion buyback services price coins purely by weight — they do not assess numismatic or collector value. Fair Vintage uses specialist coin valuers who assess every piece individually and explain their reasoning in writing. For mixed collections, this means each coin is treated on its own merits rather than averaged across the lot.

Are pre-1947 British coins worth selling?

Yes. Pre-1920 coins are 92.5% sterling silver; pre-1947 coins are 50% silver. Every pre-decimal silver coin has silver content value. Certain dates — Victorian crowns, Edward VII and George V issues, key-date shillings — also carry collector interest that our specialists assess individually. It's always worth having them valued piece by piece rather than lumped together by weight.

Is it better to sell on eBay or to a specialist buyer?

eBay can achieve high prices for the right coins — but you pay up to 12.8% in fees, need accurate descriptions and photographs, and must deal with postage, disputes and non-payment risk. A specialist buyer like Fair Vintage offers a guaranteed written price with zero commission and free insured postage both ways. For most sellers, the certainty and simplicity outweigh the theoretical upside of an auction.
