What we buy — and what makes vinyl valuable

The vinyl market is highly specific. The difference between a first UK pressing of an album and a later repress on the same label can be several hundred pounds. Condition is equally critical — the same pressing in near-mint and in played condition can differ in value by a factor of ten.

We assess every record individually for pressing, label, condition, and collector demand. Here is what typically drives value:

  • First UK pressing: Original UK pressings on their original labels — Parlophone, Decca, Island, Track, HMV, Immediate, CBS, RCA — are what collectors seek. The matrix number stamped into the dead wax (the ungrooved area near the label) confirms the pressing. We check this on every record.
  • Label design: Original label designs were changed over time. The early Parlophone black-and-gold label (pre-1968), the original orange/red Island (pre-1974), the original yellow Harvest (pre-1973) — these specific label versions are what matters to collectors, not just the label name.
  • Condition: Near-mint records play cleanly without surface noise and show minimal marks under strong light. Condition is graded and explained in writing for every record we buy.
  • Genre and artist: Classic rock, jazz (especially original UK Blue Note and Prestige pressings), northern soul 45s, early UK blues pressings, progressive rock, and punk first pressings are the strongest collector categories.

Genres and labels we particularly seek

  • Classic rock: Original UK pressings — Beatles on Parlophone, Rolling Stones on Decca, Led Zeppelin on Atlantic, Pink Floyd on Harvest, The Who on Track, Jimi Hendrix on Track/Polydor
  • Jazz: UK pressings of Blue Note, Prestige, Riverside, Verve, and original UK HMV and Parlophone jazz
  • Northern soul: Original US Tamla Motown and Atlantic 45s; UK pressings on Stateside, London, and Sue
  • Progressive rock: Original UK pressings — Virgin, Harvest, Charisma, Vertigo
  • Punk: First pressings — Stiff, Chiswick, Rough Trade, Factory
  • Blues: Original UK Chess, Pye International, Sue, Columbia and HMV blues 45s and LPs
  • Classical: Original UK Decca, EMI/Columbia, HMV, and Argo classical pressings in near-mint
  • 78 rpm: Pre-war UK blues, jazz, and dance band 78s on original Decca, Columbia, and Parlophone
The process

Four steps to your vinyl valuation

Step 01

Request your free postage pack

Tell us roughly what you have — "about 200 LPs, mostly 1960s and 70s rock" is enough. We send a free prepaid, tracked and insured label the same working day.

Step 02

Pack your records

Pack records vertically in a strong box with padding on all sides. Do not pack too tightly — records should be firm but not compressed. Insured to £5,000 from courier scan.

Step 03

Live YouTube opening

Your parcel opened publicly on YouTube before any specialist touches it. Every record visible on camera. Broadcast time confirmed in advance.

Step 04

Written valuation, then payment

Pressing identified, condition graded, collector demand assessed. Written valuation per record. Accept or decline. Return anything free. Payment within 72 hours — or we add 3%.

What makes a vinyl record valuable?

Three main factors: pressing (first UK pressing on the original label is usually most valuable), condition (near-mint vinyl with original sleeves is worth significantly more than a played copy), and demand (certain genres, labels, and artists have strong collector markets). A first UK pressing of a key 1960s rock or jazz album in near-mint condition can be worth hundreds of pounds.

Do you buy entire record collections?

Yes. We assess collections of any size. For smaller collections we value each disc individually. For larger collections we assess overall quality and proportion of valuable pressings, then offer on the collection as a whole or identify highlights for separate valuation.

How do I know if I have a first pressing?

First pressings carry specific matrix numbers stamped into the dead wax (the area between the last groove and the label). They also carry specific label designs. Email us photographs of the label and the dead wax and we'll identify the pressing for you.

Do you buy 45s and 78s as well as LPs?

Yes. Rare 7-inch singles — particularly original UK pressings of 1960s pop and soul — are actively collected. Pre-war blues and jazz 78s on original labels are sought by specialist collectors.

My records have some surface marks. Does that reduce value significantly?

Condition is critical. We grade honestly: Near Mint, Very Good Plus, Very Good, Good. Each grade below Near Mint significantly reduces the offer. We grade every record individually and explain the grade in writing.

How quickly will I be paid?

Within 72 hours of your parcel going live on YouTube — guaranteed. If we miss that window, we add 3% to your total.
