Pre-war football programmes — particularly FA Cup Finals, international matches, and early Football League fixtures — are consistently strong performers. Signed items by significant players carry premiums where provenance exists. Cricket ephemera including scorecards, cigarette cards (complete sets by Wills, Player's, Gallaher), and signed bats from notable tours are also actively sought. Boxing programmes and fight contracts from the early 20th century are a specialist area with a dedicated collector base.
Original film lobby cards, British quad posters in fine condition, signed theatrical photographs, and performance contracts carry strong collector markets — particularly for British cinema of the 1930s–1960s and Hollywood Golden Age material. Music memorabilia signed by significant artists with clear provenance, original concert programmes, and early record company promotional material are all assessed. Condition is graded against specific standards for each medium: paper ephemera must be free of tears, folds, and fading to command top prices.
Original enamel advertising signs — particularly double-sided hanging signs or pictorial signs for pre-war brands — are among the strongest performers in the British collectables market. Condition grades (VG to EX) determine value sharply: chips through to the iron base significantly reduce prices. Instruments with original fitted cases, all component parts present, and intact optics are the most desirable. Medical ephemera including anatomical models, early stethoscopes, and surgical instruments in original cases have a growing collector market distinct from the general antiques trade.
Original political posters from the Edwardian period through to the mid-20th century, particularly suffragette material, wartime propaganda, and election campaign ephemera, occupy a well-established collector market. Autographed letters and documents from historical figures are assessed on significance and condition. Coronation and royal commemorative material from specific events (1902, 1937, 1953) varies widely in value — common items have modest value, but factory samples, presentation pieces, and early designs can be substantial.
Victorian and Edwardian curiosity collecting encompassed taxidermy, natural history specimens, ethnographic items, and the simply peculiar. Taxidermy prepared before 1947 and natural history specimens not listed under CITES are legal to sell and carry active collector markets. Antique ivory (pre-1947, documented) and antique coral can be legally traded with correct paperwork — we advise on this individually. Memento mori, wax portrait miniatures, mourning jewellery, and unusual medical curiosities are all areas where we actively buy.
The collector community size and enthusiasm for the specific subcategory is the single most important factor — more than age, more than scarcity alone. A very rare piece in a category with no active buyers has limited market value; a moderately common piece in a category with tens of thousands of passionate collectors can command prices that surprise generalist dealers. Knowing where a piece sits within its specific collector hierarchy is what separates a genuinely informed offer from a guess.
Within any given collector category, condition grading is applied with specific standards that differ from general antiques. A sports card graded PSA 9 (near-mint) can be worth fifty times the same card in PSA 5 (good). A cinema poster with a fold through a face is worth a fraction of the same poster without. Rarity within a category matters too: a common Wills cigarette card set has modest value; the same condition level in a scarce Ogden's series can be five times the price. Provenance and documentation — especially for signed items — separates confident offers from conservative ones.
For collectables, the reverse often matters as much as the front — publisher's details, condition of paper, any stamps or provenance marks. Photograph both sides clearly. For signed items, include any letters of authenticity or provenance documentation you hold.

A signed programme from a significant football match, a complete set of Wills cigarette cards in pristine condition, or an original double-royal enamel sign for a pre-war petrol brand can each be worth considerably more than their material alone suggests.
Original packaging matters significantly in some collecting categories — die-cast toys, tinplate toys, and certain advertising items gain 50–200% in value when boxes are present. In others, such as signed sporting ephemera or enamel signs, packaging is irrelevant. The grading standards differ too: a sports card in near-mint condition may be worth ten times the same card in good condition. We assess condition honestly against the grading conventions specific to each category rather than applying a single standard across all collectables.
Provenance is the key factor in authentication. A signed item with a Letter of Authenticity (LOA) from a recognised autograph dealer such as Beckett, PSA, or Auctioneers such as Christie's or Bonhams carries the strongest market premium. Photographs of the signing, period newspaper coverage, or a consistent provenance chain all strengthen authenticity. Without provenance, signed items are assessed at a discount that reflects market scepticism. We do not require authentication for purchase, but we value it honestly in our offer.

We do not require minimum quantities. Estate clearances and mixed boxes are also welcomed; part of what we do is identify which items within a miscellaneous lot have genuine collector value, and price accordingly.
