Fragile & larger collections — contact us first

With ceramics and glass we are principally interested in larger, worthwhile collections rather than single pieces. Because they are fragile, please don't post anything straight away — contact us first and email several photographs: a few overall shots of the whole collection plus close-ups of any maker's marks, signatures or damage. We'll then advise on the safest way to pack and send, and for larger or more valuable collections we can often arrange to collect in person.

The forms we see most

Worcester porcelain dates back to 1751, and the factory became the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company — Royal Worcester — in the later nineteenth century. Over that long history it produced a great variety of wares, and the form of a piece is the first thing that shapes its value, because hand-painted cabinet pieces and well-modelled figures sit in a very different market from standard tableware.

Cabinet pieces

Hand-painted fruit & scenes

The finely painted fruit subjects Royal Worcester is famous for, along with landscapes, birds and flowers, often on plates, vases and comports. Signed work by a recognised painter and fine detail are of particular interest.

Figures

Figurines & models

Modelled figures and groups, including well-known series. Crisp modelling, undamaged extremities and good original decoration matter, as fine detail is easily chipped or restored.

Decorative

Vases & ornamental wares

Ornamental vases, ewers and blush-ivory and reticulated wares from the factory's decorative periods. Form, gilding and the quality of the ground and painting all form part of the assessment.

Tableware

Services & giftware

Dinner, tea and dessert services and later giftware. Pattern, completeness of a service and condition drive the assessment; matching, undamaged sets are recorded as such.

Reading the mark and date code

Royal Worcester is usually marked, and the printed mark developed over time, with a system of dots and symbols added around it to indicate the year. You do not need to decode anything; a clear photograph of the base is enough for us to read the mark and place the period.

On the baseWhat it can indicate
Printed factory markThe standard printed mark identifies the factory; its exact form and wording changed over time and helps with dating.
"Royal Worcester England"Wording including England was added from the 1890s, which helps distinguish later pieces from earlier ones.
Dots & symbolsFrom the later nineteenth century, dots and symbols around the mark form a year code that we read where present.
Shape & pattern numbersImpressed or printed shape numbers and painted pattern numbers help identify the model and decoration.
Painter's signatureA signature by a recognised painter, matched by the quality of the work, is recorded and can influence interest.

What we assess on the piece itself

Once the form and date are established, condition drives the offer. We look at four areas and note each honestly on camera.

Painting & decoration

The quality and condition of hand-painting, any signature, wear to enamels and any repainting. On cabinet pieces the painting is central to the assessment.

Body & modelling

Chips, hairline cracks, losses to modelled detail on figures, and any restoration. Crisp modelling and undamaged extremities are preferred.

Gilding

Rubbed or restored gilding, which is common on decorative and cabinet wares and is noted honestly as part of condition.

Marks & completeness

The printed mark and date code, shape and pattern numbers, matching pieces of a service, and any original stand, box or paperwork.

Fair Vintage is an independent vintage and collectables buyer and is not affiliated with, authorised by or endorsed by Royal Worcester or its current owners. Marks, date codes and signatures can help with identification, but they can be copied, misread or misleading; a physical inspection may be required before a final valuation or offer.

Before you send

Photographs that let us identify the piece

Clear photographs let us give a preliminary identification before anything is posted. Please send:

  • The whole piece from the front, and from the side for vases and figures
  • The base, showing the printed mark, any dot code and shape or pattern numbers
  • A close-up of the painting or modelled detail, and any signature
  • The gilding on rims, handles and feet
  • Any lids, liners or matching pieces of a service
  • Any faults — chips, hairlines, restoration, rubbed gilding, crazing

Photographs help with identification and condition, but they do not prove authenticity on their own; a physical inspection may still be needed. There is no need to clean the piece for a photograph.

What kind of Royal Worcester is most sought after?

Hand-painted cabinet pieces are usually the most sought after, particularly the finely painted fruit subjects associated with the factory's best painters, along with well-modelled figurines and decorative vases. Signed work by a recognised painter, good size and fine detail all add interest. That said, condition and the quality of the painting matter more than the subject alone, and tablewares and giftware still have a place.

How do I read the date mark on the base?

Royal Worcester used a printed mark that developed over time, and from the later nineteenth century added a system of dots and symbols around the mark to indicate the year. The wording — for example the addition of Royal Worcester England — also helps place a piece. You do not need to decode this yourself; send a clear photograph of the base and we will read the mark and any date code for you. Marks help with identification but can be copied or misleading, so a physical inspection may still be needed.

Does the painter's signature affect the value?

It can. Royal Worcester is well known for its named painters, and a genuine signature by a recognised hand, matched by the quality of the painting, can influence collector interest. A signature on its own does not settle a valuation, however — the quality of the work, the form, the date and the condition all matter, and signatures can be misread or imitated, so we assess the piece as a whole.

Do you buy damaged or restored Royal Worcester?

Yes. Chips, hairline cracks, restoration, rubbed gilding and losses to modelled detail are all noted honestly and reflected in the offer rather than ruling a piece out. Fine cabinet pieces retain interest even with some faults. It is worth telling us about any damage or restoration up front so the valuation is accurate from the start.

Should I clean the piece before sending it?

Only very gently. Do not scrub, soak or use harsh cleaners on Royal Worcester before valuation — gilding and hand-painted decoration can be delicate, and old restoration can be disturbed by water or heat. A light dust with a soft dry brush or cloth is enough. Send the piece as it is, with any original box, stand or paperwork you still have.
